When translating, we aim at transferring a text in a way that retains the intention of the text writer, while at the same time adapting the translation to the expectations and requirements of the readers in the target country.
This implies that some changes may have to be made. The conversion of linear measurements is a good example. While a German text may talk about people walking a distance of several kilometers, in a properly translated English version, they will walk a few miles. Generally speaking, texts should be translated: "As literal as possible, as free as necessary."
